Summer 2020
Some good news on Van Vliet Lake this summer. The eagles built a new nest on the north end of the lake and the eaglet is checking out the world from on high. Thank you, Ed Brodsky, for providing this photo.
Our annual meeting has been rescheduled to August 15. Current plan is to hold the meeting in the outdoor pavilion at the Community Center. Watch for updated information as the summer progresses.
Fall Activities
It’s Labor Day weekend and the traditional end to summer fun. We hope everyone was able to get out and enjoy the lake and the area this summer. Fall can be a lovely season to continue to appreciate our lake.
There are two guided hikes in the Van Vliet Hemlocks sponsored by the Friends group this fall. On Sat, Sep 14, John Schwarzmann of the BCPL will lead a hike starting at 10 a.m. On Sat, Oct 12, Discovery Center staff will lead a fall color hike starting at 9 a.m. Both hikes are free but numbers are limited. Register at the Discovery Center website.
Join friends and neighbors for a VVLA pot luck and campfire on Sat, Oct 5 starting at 5 p.m. at Mike and Ronie’s home. Bring a dish to share and your choice of beverage. RSVP to Ronie and give me an idea of what you can bring.
Membership
Thank you to all who attended our annual meeting and who have joined the association. Draft minutes are now available.
Take a moment to read an article our guest speaker, Ted Rulseh, wrote about lake associations.
2019 Membership Drive and Annual Meeting
VVLA Annual Meeting is scheduled for June 22, 2019 starting at 10 a.m. in the lower level meeting room of the Presque Isle Community Library. Please join us for a short business meeting followed by our guest speaker, Ted Rulseh who writes the weekly column in The Lakeland Times titled “The Lake Where You Live.”
A pot luck lunch will follow the meeting.
Hikes in the Hemlocks
The Friends of the Van Vliet Hemlocks are sponsoring two hikes this fall.
Join Licia from the Discovery Center for a fall color hike on October 13 starting at 9 a.m. On November 3, Professor Dave Ullman will lead a glacial geology hike with the goal of learning to recognize geological formations in the landscape. That hike probably will start at 1 p.m.
Sign up at the Discovery Center website to participate. There is no charge but space is limited.
